Man Feared Drowned At Lake Travis
Witnesses last saw 70-year-old man without life jacket around Rough Hollow area of lake prior to inclement weather passing through.
AUSTIN, TX — Emergency crews on Monday recovered a body at Lake Travis believed to be the man who went missing after swimming in the man-made reservoir on Sunday.
The Travis County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from the Rough Hollow area of Lake Travis at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, about a possible drowning, officials said in a press advisory. Witnesses reported a 70-year-old man had last been seen in the water without a life jacket, prompting rescue attempts. By around 8:15 p.m., however, those efforts were changed to ones of recovery rather than rescue, officials said.
A body was recovered that is likely the missing swimmer by around 4 p.m. on Monday, but officials have not officially released the drowning victim's name.

A buoy was located on the spot where the man was last seen in an effort to warn other swimmers, according to the sheriff's office. Emergency crews then scanned the areas with the use of sonar, camera and a remotely operated underwater vehicle before suspending rescue efforts around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, officials said.

The search for a body resumed Monday morning, according to the sheriff's office. The efforts were interrupted by a passing storm in the early dawn hours before the sheriff's office Underwater Recovery Team continued its search, officials said.

The area where the man was last seen is between 40 and 90 feet deep, with sharp drop-offs and underwater trees in the area, officials explained.
The incident marks the second time in a week a person has gone missing from an area lake as storms develop. On June 10, a women in her 20s was reported to have been carried away by rough waters while kayaking on Lake Pflugerville. Recovery teams recovered her body three days later.
