Man Fatally Shot By Cops At Downtown Austin Condos Identified

Police also identified the three officers involved in Wednesday's shooting — 2 firing their service guns and a third deploying a Taser.

AUSTIN, TX — The Austin Police Department on Friday identified the man shot dead by three cops at a luxury housing high-rise week, and provided the names of the officers involved.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday, July 31, at around 4:55 p.m. In a post-shooting press conference, APD Chief Brian Manley acknowledged the man was in the throes of a mental crisis when he approached two arriving officers while holding a knife, prompting two of the cops to open fire on the man while a third deployed a Taser.

The man who died after the confrontation with police was identified at Mauris Nishanga DeSilva46. The officers who shot DeSilva were identified as Karl Krycia and Christopher Taylor. A third officer, Joseph Cast, deployed his Taser.

Manley explained at the time that DeSilva failed to respond to officers' commands to drop what was described a a large kitchen knife Desilva was said to have first placed over his own neck. Officers originally were called to The Spring condominium complex, 300 Bowie St., after resident complained he had been loudly banging on emergency doors at the building.

All three officers involved have been with the local police force since Dec. 12, 2014, Manley said in a press advisory, and are currently assigned to the downtown area command. An investigation into the incident continues, according to the press advisory.

As is standard protocol after every officer-involved shooting in Austin, the police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
