(Patch Media)

Hello and good afternoon, neighbors! It's Jessica here with your Wednesday edition of the Austin Daily. Keep reading to find out the most important local news and community updates.

Settle in while we cover:

  • The city has settled a new wave of lawsuits.
  • A new mobility hub has been unveiled in North Austin.
  • One of Austin's hottest holiday traditions is BACK, with new music and a stellar cast!

But first, today's weather:

Rather cloudy and cool. High: 58 Low: 40.

Here are the top stories today in Austin:

1) During the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Nov.15, council members agreed to settle 3 additional lawsuits with individuals who were injured by police during the Summer 2020 social justice protests. KVUE reports that roughly 21 APD officers have been indicted for their use of excessive force during the protests. As of September 2022, the city had paid out more than $15 million in settlements, and there are several other active lawsuits. KVUE has more on this story here.

2) APD is seeking new leads for a cold case that happened 27 years ago. KVUE reports: "Police said on Nov. 23, 1995, at approximately 6 a.m., officers responded to a service call in the 900 block of East Sixth Street. When officers arrived, they found 30-year-old Arevalo unconscious with stab wounds to his body. He died at the scene." APD is instructing anyone with tips or information to contact Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS (8477). Head over to KVUE to learn more about this mysterious case.

3) Texas lawmakers push to block the enactment of guaranteed income programs across the state. Austin became one of the first cities in the Lonestar State to approve and fund $1.1M towards a guaranteed income program. KXAN reports: "These taxpayer funds will give $1,000 a month to 85 families or individuals facing extreme financial hardship. Survey results showed slightly more than 30% of the pilot program's participants have a household income below $10,000, while almost 52% said they made less than $15,000." Texas Rep.-elect Ellen Troxclair hopes to put a stop to programs like this across the state and has filed three pieces of legislation to do so. KXAN has more on this developing story here.

4) A new mobility hub in North Austin now offers residents transportation options in what was previously labeled a "transit desert". The University of Texas' School of Architecture, the City of Austin's Transportation Department, and nonprofit organization, Jail to Jobs, partnered to launch this initiative. Community Impact reports: "People were having to walk in a high crime area for upwards of a mile. We came up with the option of creating short-term mobility options," said Chris Haskins, founder of Jail To Jobs. From the hub, residents can now either rent a free Lime Scooter to their desired location, or, schedule one of the designated buses operated by Jail to Jobs. Get the full scoop over at Community Impact. What an incredible initiative that I hope to see replicated across the city as our mass transit system grows!
