National Mutt Day is December 2: Here Are 5 Reasons to Celebrate

Friends of fido, unite! Monday, Dec. 2, is National Mutt Day!

The holiday experts at National Today are here to help you celebrate the mighty mutts in our lives who are so often (and sadly) overlooked in favor of their purebred brethren.

The fact is, mixed breed dogs are just as wonderful as purebred dogs and in some cases actually beat out those with better pedigrees. Here are a few reasons to celebrate mutts this December 2 (and all the other days, really).

1. MUTTS TEND TO BE HEALTHIER THAN PUREBRED DOGS. Yes, it is true. Thanks to a little thing called genetic diversity, mixed breed pups tend to have longer and healthier lives. Having a larger gene pool from which to pull from means they are more likely to have stronger immune systems and are naturally selected for survival. Long live the mutts!
2. THEY ARE UNIQUE. No two mutts are exactly the same. Their mixed breeding means that the pupper you are celebrating is really one-of-a-kind. Add to that the unique personality your mutt is likely to already display and you've got a life-long furry friend who is unlike anyone else's.
3. MUTTS ARE MORE AFFORDABLE. It's just a fact that purebred dogs tend to cost a lot more to purchase and to own than mutts do. Adopting a mixed breed dog is almost always more cost-effective in the short run and the long run and the tummy rubs are just as welcome!
4. YOU'RE SPREADING AWARENESS OF ADOPTION AND RESCUE SERVICES. It is more likely that you will find a mutt in a shelter than a purebred dog (which is, of course, a travesty). By adopting a mutt at a shelter, you're doing more than just giving a beautiful dog a good home, you're helping others see that mutts are just as deserving of love and attention as any purebred dog.
5. LESS MONEY GOING TO PUPPY MILLS. Puppy mills have contributed heavily to the weakening of purebred genetic lines. This disgusting practice of overbreeding purebred dogs for monetary gain is widespread but the more people who adopt mutts, the less money going to these unsavory practices.
