Pflugerville Names Shane Mize Parks And Recreation Director

New director who most recently held same position in Hutto has 15 years' experience in the parks & rec field, officials said.

PFLUGERVILLE, TX — Pflugerville City Council members on Tuesday evening confirmed the appointment of Shane Mize as the municipality's new Parks and Recreation Director.

The appointment came during the council's May 14 meeting. Mize has spent the last 15 years as a public servant in the parks and recreation industry, city officials said. Previously, he was a Community Center Supervisor in the City of Fort Worth, and then served as both a Recreation Superintendent and Assistant Director during his time in the City of Missouri City. Most recently he was the Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Hutto, according to a provided bio.

"Mize is a strong advocate for the role of parks and recreation and its impact on the quality of life, the environment and the local economy it serves," officials wrote in a press advisory.

He is a member of both the Texas Recreation and Parks Society and the National Recreation and Parks Association, where he was served on state and national boards and committees. Mize was awarded the Texas Recreation and Parks Society’s Young Professional of the Year Award in 2011, the Southwest Region Outstanding Young Professional of the Year Award in 2012 and the National Recreation and Parks Association’s National Young Professional of the Year Award in 2012. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports, Fitness and Leisure Management from Hardin Simmons University and a Master’s Degree in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration from Western Illinois University.

Pflugerville’s Parks and Recreation Director oversees park development and maintenance, recreation programs and classes, aquatic programs and pools, special events and the Pflugerville Recreation Center. Mize will start in his new role at the beginning of June 2019.
