Here are the top stories in Austin today:
- This past February 29-year-old Cassady Douglas of Austin "broke the record for the largest smallmouth buffalo caught at Lady Bird Lake in Austin." When he hooked it, he "realized it was a tremendously huge fish" and "knew right away that his catch would be a record-breaker." He said, "The fight was just so intense. It was a very strong fish." He decided to apply "to be recognized by the Texas Parks and Wildlife's Lady Bird Lake all-tackle records" and "about a month and a half" later, "his name was added to the list as the angler who caught the largest smallmouth buffalo using a rod and reel." - The Austin Independent School District (AISD) has "more than 20 districtwide enrollment clinics" for families to receive "support and resources to get their child registered for the 2022-23 school year." The clinics are open Monday-Wednesday from 2-8 p.m." However, "if families don't have immediate access to all the items needed to register, the enrollment teams can still help start the enrollment process" and information can be submitted "up to 30 days after the first day of school with their campus of enrollment." - Juneteenth, which falls on Sunday, June 19, commemorates "the day Union soldiers landed at Galveston Bay, reporting that the war over and slavery had ended, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln." To celebrate the historical event, several Austin-area communities will be holding celebratory events starting on June 15 until June 19. - Three University of Texas (UT) Women's Tennis team members earned "All-American honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)." They are "sophomores Peyton Stearns and Kylie Collins and freshman Allura Zamarripa." Team members "Stearns and Collins received the honor in singles, while Stearns and Zamarripa earned the accolade as a doubles pair." It was the second year in a row that Stearns earned "Singles All-America honors," and the first time that Collins got "Singles All-America honors... after earning Doubles All-America recognition last season."
