Here are the top stories today in Austin:
- On Thursday, June 16, the Austin City Council "approved a resolution to explore raising the age for purchasing AR-15-style rifles and other semi-automatic weapons from 18 to 21." The resolution passed "with a 10-1 vote" by lawmakers, with the opposing vote by Council Member MacKenzie Kelly. She "raised questions about potential legal action from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, and local businesses, because the higher gun purchasing age for semi-automatic weapons increase could violate state law." - Father's Day is Sunday, June 19, and if you haven't gotten your dad a gift yet, you may consider getting him a new pet! There are many "available for adoption" at animal shelters in Austin." According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, over 6 million pets are surrendered or taken in each year by animal rescue organizations nationwide. - Austinites love to "keep Austin weird," and on Sunday, June 19, locals will also have a chance to "keep Father's Day quirky" in town! "If you're looking for something different to do to celebrate" your dad, there are many "'weird' and out-of-the-box things to do" in Austin and surrounding areas. - There's a new "dance craze that has really caught on," and it's called the "shuffle." According to Lakisha Lemons from Spectrum News, "it's an inclusive, welcoming community" which has now "made its way to Austin." Let's do the shuffle and see it at: (News 13 Orlando)
- On Thursday, June 21, "the City of Austin" will hold its "first community meeting for the Montopolis Pool renovation project" at 7 p.m. The project "is part of the 2018 Aquatic Vision Plan, a master plan used to guide improvements and assessments of Austin pools."
