Special Runoff Election Date Set For 3 Texas House Seats

The governor sets the date of special election to replace outgoing House members to Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020.

AUSTIN, TX — The governor of Texas formally set the date for special runoff elections to fill three vacant Texas House District seats.

The date set for voters to cast ballots in replacing three outgoing representatives was set for Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, according to the governor's office. The early voting period for the elections will start on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020.

The following Texas House Districts are included in the special runoff election date:

  • The Texas House District 28 seat in Fort Bend County vacated by Rep. John Zerwas, a Republican from Richmond. Zerwas held the seat for a dozen years before announcing his retirement last summer. He won reelection last year by a mere 8-point margin, the same election cycle when Sen. Ted Cruz held onto his seat by a razor's edge of 3 percent against former El Paso, Texas, congressman Beto O'Rourke. (Read the proclamation).
  • The Texas House District 100 seat in Dallas County vacated by Rep. Eric Johnson. (Read the proclamation). Johnson, a Democrat from West Dallas, left the Legislature to become mayor of Dallas after holding the House District 100 set for nearly a decade.
  • The Texas House District 148 seat in Harris County vacated by the Rep. Jessica Farrar. (Read the proclamation). The Houston Democrat announced her retirement from the Texas House after 25 years.
