Ten People Involved In Boat Collision At Lake Travis: Austin EMS [UPDATED]

Three sustain injuries at lake that was just recently re-opened to boating after flood waters made it untypically treacherous.

Austin, TX -- Ten people were involved in a boat collision late Saturday at Lake Travis, including two requiring medical attention, emergency rescue officials said.

Austin-Travis County EMS officials and STAR Flight helicopter crews responded to the lake at 5973 Hiline Road at around 9:30 p.m.

In their initial Twitter updates, EMS officials indicated they were searching for all the victims, revising that assessment by about 10:15 p.m. to convey that all 10 people involved in the collision had been accounted for.

EMS officials said eight people declined treatment, but three required medical attention. The three adult female victims -- two women in their 3os and one in her 40s -- were transported to Round Rock Medical Center for treatment of injuries not deemed to be life-threatening, Austin-Travis County EMS officials said.

Up until recently, a ban on boating had been in effect at Lake Travis due to heavy rains in May. The lake's stewards, the Lower Colorado River Authority, instituted the ban due to heightened water levels and flood-fueled debris -- ingredients that made the lake particularly treacherous.

"LCRA is taking this action due to the increasing danger submerged objects pose to recreational boaters and the detrimental impact of boat wakes to property," officials said at the time in an urgent advisory.

Officials let the public know that the lake was 100 percent filled -- the first time in in nearly a decade the lake had been at that level, hovering at just over 680 feet above sea level.

Those changed dynamics are believed to have contributed to the drowning death of a swimmer at Lake Travislast month. On June 17, emergency rescue teams found the body of Brian Robinson, 31, of White Plains, N.Y., several days after he had gone missing.

Despite those flood-created dangers and the drowning, it's still unclear if higher waters -- producing stronger-than-normal currents -- or added debris contributed to Saturday's boat collision.

The boat collision came mere hours after a small airplane crashed into Travis Lake shortly after having taken off from the Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
