The win was made more impressive given the absence of starting quarterback Shand Buechele. From the start, the San Jose State Spartans were over-matched. The visiting team's defense is considered one of the worst in the country.

The Longhorns capitalized on this defensive weakness early on after San Jose State's defensive tackle Sailosi Latu went down. It was pretty much over from there, with Texas racking up 406 yards and six touchdown on 59 carries.
Freshman QB Sam Ehlinger showed a grace under pressure that belied his youth. He scrambled when the need arose, and gained 48 yards on seven carries. All told, he completed 15 of 27 attempts for 222 yards and one touchdown.

Junior running back Chris Warren III was among the standouts, with 16 carries good for 166 yards and two touchdowns. One of those TDs was a 41-yard spectacle early in the second quarter highlighting Warren's impressive speed.
Fellow junior wide receiver Jerrod Heard was no slouch, contributing with eight carries for 39 yards and two touchdowns of his own.
The rout cast a spotlight on backup players' impressive plays too. Freshman running back Toneil Carter broke several tackles on his way to a 38-yard run, ultimately scoring his career TD. Another freshman, Daniel Young, looked impressive with four carries.
