Texas Coronavirus: 13 New Deaths; Cases Pass 55,000

Here are the latest numbers and information on the new coronavirus in Texas.

AUSTIN, TX — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Texas reached 55,348 on Sunday, with the total increasing by 809 in the past 24-hours. The Texas Department of Health and Human Services also reported 13 new deaths.

As of Sunday, 1,519 Texans have died from coronavirus-related illnesses.

On Saturday, the number of additional cases increased by 1,060, bringing the total count to 54,509. On that day, 26 additional more patients died from the illness linked to the virus.

According to the dashboard, 870,935 total tests have been administered in the state.

The highest rates of illness as of Sunday were in the following counties:

  • Harris County: 10,770 cases
  • Dallas County: 8,649 cases
  • Tarrant County: 4,951 cases
  • Travis County: 2,788cases
  • Bexar County: 2,418 cases
  • El Paso County: 2,340 cases
  • Potter County: 2,238 cases
  • Fort Bend County: 1,676 cases
  • Denton County: 1,212 cases
  • Collin County: 1,136 cases

This week's cases come during a week of more business reopenings decreed by Gov. Greg Abbott via executive orders as he seeks to reignite a state economy stalled by the illness spread.

Several businesses were allowed to reopen this week and a myriad of activities were allowed to resume, with more reopenings planned through month's end.
