Majority Of Students Pass End-Of-Course Exams: Texas Education Agency

Texas students posted the highest statewide passing rates – above 90 percent – in U.S. History, TEA officials reported.

AUSTIN, TX — A majority of Texas students were successful in completing the five State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) end-of-course exams, according to statewide results released by the Texas Education Agency.

The results reflect passing rates for the spring 2017 administration of STAAR. In statewide results for the 2016–2017 school year for all testers, Texas students posted the highest statewide passing rates – above 90 percent – in U.S. History. Results for all students tested for 2016-2017 are as follows:

Algebra I: 82 percent

Biology: 85 percent

U.S. History: 92 percent

English I: 60 percent

English II: 62 percent

TEA officials also released STAAR results for reading and mathematics tests for grades 3-7, writing tests in grades 4-7, science tests in grades 5 and 8 and social studies test in grade 8.

Here are the passage rates for the 2016-17 school year, according to grade:

MATH

TEA officials noted that 76 percent of third-grade students passed the STAAR math test, according to results for the spring 2017 administration of the standardized test.

Grade 3: 76 percent

Grade 4: 75 percent

Grade 6: 75 percent

Grade 7: 68 percent

READING

Seventy-two percent of third grade and seventh grade students passed the STAAR reading test.

Grade 3: 72 percent

Grade 4: 70 percent

Grade 6: 67 percent

Grade 7: 72 percent

WRITING

Grade 4: 63 percent

Grade 7: 68 percent

SCIENCE

Fifth graders posted a passing rate of 73 percent in STAAR science. The eighth-grade passing rate in science was 74 percent.

GRADE 5: 73 percent

Grade 8: 74 percent

SOCIAL STUDIES

In addition, eighth graders posted a 62 percent passing rate in social studies.
