Texas Sen. Ted Cruz Rebuffed On Hug Offer Via Twitter

Actress Alyssa Milano called for group hug after Democratic loss in key Georgia race, but was creeped out by Cruz's unsolicited offer.

AUSTIN, TX — Politicians—they're just like us!

They tweet, get into arguments on social media, flirt, joke, send unsolicited invitations to women of opposite political ideologies offering unsolicited, and unwanted, hugs. Okay, maybe they're not just like us.

Unabashed liberal Alyssa Milano (of "Who's the Boss?" fame and UNICEF spokesperson) is a prolific tweeter in expressing her thoughts on political matters.

In the absence of town halls for constituents (to which GOP members share an aversion for fear of being shouted off stage) the actress/political activist has taken to posting videos on Twitter of voters airing their concerns directly to lawmakers. (See: On Account Of All The Shouting Elsewhere, Texas Republicans Aren't Staging Austin Town Halls.)

Milano previously expressed her sadness in the wake of a key loss for Democrats in Georgia. In a razor thin margin, Democrat Jon Ossoff lost to Karen Handel, a Republican, by less than 10,000 votes. The election had been seen largely as a referendum on the first months of Donald J. Trump's presidency.

Soon after is when Sen. Ted Cruz lurked by, virtually speaking: "We all need a hug!" he tweeted Milano with a winking icon that, under other circumstances, would have been an adorable addendum rather than one suffused with creepiness.

Cruz was quickly rebuffed: "Not you, @tedcruz," came Milano's swift reply. "You're not invited."

Ouch.

Ten minutes later, Milano added: "But anytime you want to get together to talk about your duty to your constituents, I'd love to chat. People before party."

Double ouch.

Cruz is no stranger to awkward situations centered on hugs. While on the campaign trail during his presidential run, when it already starting to become apparent he wouldn't be his party's nominee, he tried getting a hug from one of his young daughters. She wasn't having it, and squirmed as he got closer. In fairness, kids can be finicky and moody, but still it was hard to watch. Click below to watch it:

Later, as he conceded the inevitable as he congratulated Trump on securing the nomination while thanking his own supporters, he inadvertently messed up what should've been a group hug with his dad and wife. After announcing he was suspending his presidential campaign, he reaches over to hug his father and accidentally first punches his wife in the face and then elbows her before drawing her into the group hug.

It's hard to watch. Among those who have watched the footage, it's often studied with the intensity in analyzing the Zapruder film—frame by frame, in slow motion, enlarged in putting details in greater focus—given its implausibly compelling nature. Click below to watch:

While it may seem untoward or unbecoming for a distinguished member of the U.S. Senate to be sending unsolicited tweets to attractive actresses, it's not out of character for Cruz. He often belies his wooden image and wonky nature, coming up with wacky stuff from time to time, like when he proposed having a Mexican, if not all of Mexico, build "the wall" along the southern border.
