Here are the top stories today in Austin:
1) Texas' 'Trigger Law' officially went into effect. Abortion is already effectively outlawed in Texas under a statute predating Roe v. Wade. The new trigger law, however, will increase criminal and civil penalties for violations.
As of Thursday, performing an abortion is now a felony punishable by up to life in prison. The trigger law's only narrow exception is to save the life of a pregnant patient. KVUE has more on this story here.
2) The Biden Administration announced its "Student Loan Debt" plan canceling student loan debt for 43 million borrowers, but the announcement was met with mixed feelings amongst the Austin community. KVUE headed to South Congress to ask the community about their thoughts on the new plan – check it out here.
3) Micron Technology Inc. is considering a plan to spend as much as $160 billion on a new semiconductor factory in central Texas, near Lockhart. The company hasn't made any final decisions on location, timing, or scope of expansion plans, but the Idaho-based company has submitted incentive applications with a pledge for at least 80 jobs. Austonia has the full story here.
4) Not a fan of crowds and heat, but love live music? ACL has officially dropped its "Fest Nights" lineup. The performances will take place at various venues around Austin from Oct. 5-9 and Oct. 13-15. The lineup includes blues favorite Buffalo Nichols, indie pop artist Japanese Breakfast, and many more! Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. Check out the full lineup and more details here at KXAN.
