Here are the top stories today in Austin:

1) Texas school districts to honor Uvalde CISD after Robb Elementary shooting. Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District is set to start its new school year on Tuesday, Sept.6, and school districts across the state are encouraging their communities to show their support.

On Sept. 6, students, parents, teachers, and community members are asked to wear maroon and white, Uvalde's school colors, to show support for the district after the deadly mass shooting in May. KVUE has more on this story here.


2) New clinic in East Austin will bring healthcare specialists to low-income Travis County residents. Central Health announced on Wednesday that it will be transforming the historic Rosewood-Zaragosa health center into a new state-of-the-art specialty care clinic. The newly updated clinic is expected to open to the public in the fall of 2023 and will serve Medical Access Program (MAP) members.KVUE reports that MAP and MAP Basic are health coverage programs provided by Central Health for Travis County residents with low income and without health insurance.

Central Health plans to hire several full-time health care providers across six specialties: cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, podiatry, and pulmonology. Check out the full story here at KVUE.


3) Enrollment in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund is officially open and running through Feb. 28. The Texas Tuition Promise Fund is a prepaid tuition plan that allows individuals to lock in the cost of undergraduate resident college tuition and required fees at today’s college prices.

KXAN reports: “Participants in the plan purchase ‘tuition units’ that can be used later toward undergraduate resident tuition and schoolwide required fees at Texas public colleges and universities, excluding medical and dental institutions. Prices are based on 2022-23 academic year costs for the state’s public colleges and universities.”
