UT Austin’s McCombs School Launches New One-Year Master’s Program
Inaugural Master of Science in Information Technology and Management will begin July 2018, school officials said.

AUSTIN, TX —The McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin is launching a Master of Science in Information Technology and Management (MSITM) program in the summer of next year, officials have announced.
The inaugural Texas MSITM class will begin in July 2018, according to university officials.
“The economy is rapidly changing around mobile, cloud and emerging technologies like Internet of Things, cognitive computing, blockchain and artificial intelligence,” Prabhudev Konana, associate dean of instructional innovation at the McCombs School, said. “Leading businesses are transforming their product and service strategies and business practices around these digital technologies.”

The aim of the new coursework is for students to augment their undergraduate education with a master’s degree in information technology and management, ultimately looking for career placement in software engineering, IT product management, technology analysis, or other technical-related positions, university officials said. Applicants will be required to demonstrate quantitative aptitude, and programming and database experience, officials added.
Students in the Texas MSITM program will complete 36 credit hours of graduate coursework during a 10-month period consisting of three semesters — summer, fall and spring, according to school officials. The program is designed for students from diverse undergraduate backgrounds and little or no prior work experience, officials said.

As the university explained, students will gain hands-on experience working with real-world businesses providing solutions to issues at the forefront of information technologies. The program has received support across a variety of industries including consulting, technology, automotive, energy and finance, officials added.
“The Texas MSITM program is specifically designed to meet the growing market demand for IT professionals who can design, develop and manage IT solutions using these technologies to create business or social value,” said Caryn Conley, director of the Texas MSITM program.
McCombs’ top-ranked career services will offer students exclusive resources and support such as one-on-one career coaching, mock interviews and industry visits to help them secure positions after graduation, officials said. The STEM-designated MSITM program will take an interdisciplinary approach, with courses taught by top-ranked faculty members from both McCombs and the College of Engineering, according to an advisory.
“We are excited about the opportunity to help students strengthen their business and technical skills to prepare for future technological advancements, and look forward to welcoming our first cohort in summer 2018,” Conley said.
Applications are now being accepted for the class of 2019. The tuition is $38,000 for in-state students and $43,000 for out-of-state students. For more information on how to apply, visit the Texas MSITM website.
