UT-Austin Student Sexually Assaulted In Dormitory Building

Campus police said the 'non-stranger' incident was reported at 10:40 p.m. on Sunday but it's unclear if an arrest has been made.

AUSTIN, TEXAS — A University of Texas at Austin student was sexually assaulted late Sunday, according to campus police.

UT police responded to the incident at 10:40 p.m. on Sunday at the Jester West dormitory building at 201 E. 21st St., officials said via social media. The incident was categorized as a "non-stranger sexual assault," meaning it took place between acquaintances. The student reported the incident occurred at 5 p.m., according to campus police.

As police investigate the incident, they issued guidance to students to the end of avoiding becoming victimized. "The most common type of sexual assault is perpetrated by someone the victim knows, not by a stranger," police wrote in a Facebook post. "Consent is enthusiastic agreement required by all and can be revoked at any time. Sexual activity requires consciousness and clarity."

Students should never feel pressured to engage in sexual activity against their will, police added: "Don’t feel obligated to do anything you don’t want to do. 'I don’t want to' is always a good enough reason."

It's not clear if an arrest has been made in the case.
