UTSA Paying Former Coach $650K In Return For His Resignation

Larry Coker, 67, stepped down as coach after a disappointing 3-9 season last year.

SAN ANTONIO, TX -- The University of Texas at San Antonio is paying its former football coach Larry Coker $650,000 in exchange for his resignation, according to a settlement document released by school officials.

Among the settlement terms, Coker will be allowed the use of a suite at the Alamodome on game days for the coming UTSA football season, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Released on Wednesday, the settlement document details that Coker would receive his pay in two installments: One lump sum of $550,000 due in April and the balance “on or before” Oct. 15.

In January, Coker, 67, stepped down from the post for which he served as the inaugural coach for the university’s football program he helped create in 2009. He took the job after winning a national championship at Miami.

“Coker spent 37 years working his way from coach of a small Oklahoma high school to the helm of an elite college program at Miami,” ESPN reported at the time. “He led the Hurricanes to a 12-0 record and the national championship in 2001, his first year as head coach after taking over for Butch Davis.”

At his helm, the UTSA Roadrunners posted a 26-32 record while the program moved from FCS to WAC to Conference USA play, as CBS Sports summarized in a report.

"UTSA has been a very special place to me and I will be forever grateful for the experience, Coker said in a statement at the time. "The future of UTSA football is very bright and I look forward to watching the Roadrunners' success in the future."

Among the highlights during Coker's UTSA stint were an 8-4 finish in 2012 and a 7-5 showing in 2013, CBS Sports noted when the coach stepped down. But the team never played in a bowl game and finished with a disappointing 3-9 this past season.
