Dead Man In East Austin Drug Deal May Have Tried To Rob Dealers

Keeven Darral Cubit​, 26, died in a drug deal turned deadly but police are now saying he had tried to rob drug dealers before being shot.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — More details have emerged related to an East Austin drug deal turned deadly for which two teenagers are now in jail — including clams the man who died also was involved in the robbery the two teens are accused of having committed.

Referencing recently filed court documents, the Austin American-Statesman reported the man who died, Keeven Darral Cubit, 26, had gone to a dwelling along the 1100 block of Poquito Street on April 19, with the two charged teens — Alexander Lee Moux Jr., 17, and Jose Luis Vargas-Martinez, 18.

The plan, police said, was for the trio to exchange drugs and rob two drug dealers, according to the report. Cubit is said to have gotten into the car with the drug dealers before trying to take their cash. A struggle ensued, Cubit pulled a gun on the dealers while the other dealer drew his own weapon, according to the report.

Cubit ultimately was fired upon. The two dealers are said to have voluntarily gone ot police to give their account, and have not been charged yet, according to the report. Another man wounded in the fracas also has yet to face charges.

Moux and Vargas-Martinez, who police said watched the shooting unfold from a distance, have been charged with aggravated robbery, court documents how. Both were in the Travis County Jail on Tuesday, and are being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Booking photos were not made available.
