Police Release Footage Related To Fatal East Austin Shooting

Travis County Sheriff's Office seeks public's help in solving the unsolved murder of Juan Carlos Gomez, 32, of Mexico last Friday.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — Police on Wednesday released surveillance camera footage related to the unsolved killing of a Mexican national in East Austin last week.

About a quarter before 9 p.m. on Friday, July 20, Travis County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an "assist EMS" call along the 9300 block of FM 969. Where a Hispanic man was found on the ground near his vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Deputies applied CPR to the victim until the arrival of Austin-Travis County EMS medics who transported the man to Dell Seton Medical Center where he later died.

The victim was subsequently identified as Juan Carlos Gomez, 32, of Mexico. Gomez had departed his residence at about 8 p.m. to buy ice at a nearby convenience store before he was fatally shot by an unknown gunman who fled the scene, police said. At the time, Gomez was driving a white, four-door truck and was wearing a white T-shirt and gray shorts, officials added in their press advisory.

One witness told police he saw a white passenger vehicle chasing Gomez's truck shortly before he was shot, according to the advisory. A second witness reported seeing a white car speeding away from the area, police added.

Sheriff's officials released images of a vehicle that is of interest to detectives working the homicide. The sheriff's office asks anyone who can identify the owner and/or occupant/s of the vehicle pictured in the still frame images and seen following the white truck in the upper portion of the video, to call the tip line.

The sheriff's office released both edited and unedited surveillance camera footage of the vehicle involved in the hopes it might job someone's memory in securing more witness accounts.
