Suspect In Austin Man's Killing At Greek Bar Claims Innocence (Video)

The Serb says he was simply in wrong place, wrong time during attack, while family prepares victim's funeral service in East Austin church.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — One of the suspects in the killing of an Austin man in Greece has entered a not guilty plea—saying he was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time—while the family of the victim prepares for his funeral service on Saturday.

Nenad Javanovic, a 22-year-old Serb, told the court he did not take participate in a bar fight that killed Bakari Henderson, 22, in Zakinthos' rowdy tourist district of Lagana on July 7, WDRB reported. Previous reports indicate Henderson had asked to take a selfie with one of the bar's waitresses in the club, sparking the deadly melee that resulted in the victim's beating death by up to 15 men.

“I saw big chaos, pushing around, nothing else,” Javanovic, who has been released on bail told B92 television, as WDRB reported. "I feel bad that we were there in the first place. I expect to continue with my life, I am a free man. I am sorry about the young man," he said, referring to Henderson. "Nobody deserves that."

Henderson was celebrating in Greece, where he had planned a photo shoot for the launch of his clothing line. He had recently graduated from the University of Arizona after having attended Anderson High School and graduating from Hyde Park Baptist High School in 2013 in Austin. Henderson also was a former intern in the office of Texas House Speaker Joe Straus.

Funeral services for Henderson are scheduled Saturday, July 15, at the Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in East Austin. The church is located at 4301 Tannehill Lane.

Details are emerging as to what led to Henderson's confrontation with nine men at the Greek bar. After the alleged selfie incident, Henderson was chased out of the bar and set upon by a group of 10 to 15 men who beat him to death. The severity of the attack was so brutal, reports indicate Henderson died of head trauma within a 30-second-span.

Since then, nine suspects between the ages of 18 to 34 have been charged in the incident, WDRB reported. Two of the suspects, including Javanovic, have been released on bail while six others—one Greek, one British citizen of Serb origin and four Serbs—sit in jail pending trial, the news station reported. A ninth suspect, a 33-year-old Serb, was scheduled to appear Saturday before a judge to determine bail eligibility or whether he'll continue to be held in custody, the station reported.

A 15-minute surveillance video from the scene has since emerged and uploaded to YouTube, documenting the attack. A caution to viewers, as images may be disturbing to some.
