Suspect In East Austin Convenience Store Robberies Nabbed

Carlton Dorsett Lewis accused of robbing several retail sites between Sept. 25 to Oct. 16, brandishing gun at five of seven heists.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — A suspect remained in jail Tuesday after being arrested in connection with a string of convenience store robberies in East Austin.

Carlton Dorsett Lewis was booked into Travis County Jail Saturday on charges of robbery and parole violation, according to jail records. He remained behind bars as of Tuesday under $150,000 bail.

At a Tuesday news conference, police said Dorsett was the suspect in a string of robberies that occurred both in daytime and nighttime from Sept. 25 to Oct. 16. In five of seven of those heists, the suspect is alleged to have brandished a handgun.

Upon being arrested, Lewis was said to have been contrite in telling police of his family's health woes at the reason for his actions. While expressing empathy, police said the motivation for his alleged crimes had no bearing on the criminality of the acts. Lewis at times robbed the same store more than once in a span of mere days, according to previous police reports.
