📰 News we're reading

• Gov. Abbott proposes legislation capping administrative spending in schools, limited impact expected in El Paso (elpasomatters.org) — Gov. Greg Abbott used a campaign stop in El Paso to pitch legislation requiring school districts to spend at least 70% of funds "in the classroom," but local education leaders say most area districts already meet that mark. El Paso and Ysleta officials argue the real problem is inadequate state funding and enrollment declines, pointing to recent layoffs and financial exigency at EPISD as they brace for more budget pressure.

• City explores federal funding for Futureland improvements (kfoxtv.com) — Futureland residents in Northeast El Paso may finally see long-awaited basics like paved streets, streetlights, and sewer service as the city explores federal Community Project Funding with Rep. Veronica Escobar's office. City staff estimate roughly $50 million in phased work, while El Paso Water's wastewater project remains scheduled for 2030 but could move up the priority list. Neighbors are pressing leaders to deliver the same infrastructure other El Pasoans already have.

• CBP, Border Patrol agents assist in injured hiker rescue in Franklin Mountains (ktsm.com) — An injured hiker was airlifted from Franklin Mountains State Park after El Paso Fire Department's search and rescue team called in U.S. Customs and Border Protection air and Border Patrol specialists for help. Crews used night vision and hoist operations to reach the man on steep terrain, ultimately stabilizing and transporting him safely. Local and federal teams say close coordination made the nighttime rescue possible.
