Fort Worth Students Compete at State Esports Championship at Baylor University

FORT WORTH, Texas — Students from Harmony School of Innovation–Fort Worth are in action this week at the TXSEF Undisputed State Championship, taking place April 30 through May 2 at Baylor University’s Mark and Paula Hurd Welcome Center in Waco.

The statewide competition is part of a major esports weekend hosted by Baylor University, which is expected to bring more than 4,000 student gamers to campus over several days. The event combines high school and collegiate championship tournaments, highlighting the continued growth of scholastic esports. Among the Harmony School of Innovation–Fort Worth teams participating are Team Tigrez in Fortnite and Squaffles S in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, both of which earned spots among the state’s top competitors.

“Esports is one of the most challenging sports high school athletes participate in,” said Angel Jumper, M.Ed., engineering teacher and esports coach at Harmony School of Innovation–Fort Worth. “The hours of statistics and analysis conducted for each matchup, along with the depth of strategic preparation, often go unseen by the average spectator. I am proud that these athletes are receiving the recognition they deserve for the discipline and preparation they bring to every competition.”

Team captain Jaylen Rios said the program has helped build a strong sense of community on campus.

“A lot of us didn’t even know each other before esports, and now we’ve built a really big community here at HSI,” Rios said. “People think it’s just sitting in front of a screen, but it’s really about unity and the time we put in together. That’s something I’ll never forget.”

The TXSEF championship features top teams competing in titles such as Valorant and Overwatch 2, with select finals taking place on a large stage alongside collegiate competitions, giving high school players a unique championship experience.
