2. Substantial rain is expected to visit the Valley later this week (valleycentral.com) — Harlingen and the rest of the Rio Grande Valley should prepare for several days of steady rain, thunderstorms, and cooler temperatures starting late Thursday, with three to four inches possible. While the soaking will ease recent dry, hot conditions, residents are warned to watch for street flooding and drainage issues in neighborhoods that struggle with heavy downpours.
3. Majority of Texas court upholds conviction of woman on death row (knewz.com) — A long-running Texas death-row case with roots in Harlingen took another turn as the state's appeals court upheld Melissa Lucio's conviction in her daughter Mariah's 2007 death. Judges rejected a lower court's finding of innocence, despite concerns about coerced statements and withheld evidence. Lucio's attorneys now plan to take the case to federal courts while Harlingen remains central to the tragedy's history.
4. Goodwin: Texas Senate will be run very differently if I am elected lieutenant governor (riograndeguardian.com) — A statewide candidate for Texas lieutenant governor recently visited Harlingen, speaking at a local Democratic forum about changing how the Texas Senate operates and emphasizing public schools, healthcare, affordability, and infrastructure. She criticized the current lieutenant governor's influence over senators and described how her campaign is countering attack ads and deepfake videos. Harlingen residents heard her pitch directly as the race heads toward November.
