7-Eleven Announces Comeback To Houston

Convenience store giant hopes to open at least 17 stores in the Houston area, will grow to nearly 10,000 nationally.

HOUSTON, TX -- The 7-Eleven convenience store chain, a staple in many Houston area neighborhoods until the late 1980s, is poised for a comeback to many Texas markets.

In a press release issued Thursday, 7-Eleven Inc announced an asset purchase agreement with Sunoco LP that allows 7-Eleven to acquire more than 1,000 stores in 18 states.

This acquisition supports our growth strategy in key geographic areas including Florida, mid-Atlantic states, Northeast states, and Central Texas," Joe DePinto, President and Chief Executive Officer of 7-Eleven Inc. said in a prepared statement. "It also provides 7-Eleven entry into Houston, the 4th largest city in the United States, and a strong presence in Corpus Christi and across South Texas.

Sunoco operates 17 stores in the greater Houston area, but it’s not yet clear if all of those stores will be part of the acquisition deal.

Once the acquisition is completed, 7-Eleven will have nearly 10,000 stores nationwide.

Right now, the closest 7-Eleven stores to Houstonians looking for that Slurpee fix, is 100 miles to south in Edna, Palacios, Smithville, and Port Lavaca.

The deal is expected to close by mid-2017.
