KATY, TX — A Katy man was arrested and charged with narcotics possession with intent to distribute and evading arrest after he picked up a package that allegedly contained more than 100 grams of fentanyl on Monday.

Deputies from the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office arrested the 22-year old man at his apartment on Fry Road at Interstate 10 on Monday night, shortly after he’d picked up a package at a nearby post office, officials said.

Investigators said the narcotics were shipped from an address in China, according to a KPRC report. (Want to get daily updates about traffic news and other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Houston Patch morning newsletter.)

Officials in HazMat suits searched the man’s apartment and found an undisclosed amount of cocaine and heroin locked in a safe, according to a KTRK report.

Officials said they believe the suspect could be a supplier of fentanyl and have not released his name because he is cooperating with law enforcement, which could yield more arrests later.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, that has characteristics to morphine, but is 50 to 100 times more potent, according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.

In recent weeks, investigators have investigated several overdose deaths among young people who’d used heroin mixed with fentanyl.

Pct 5 Constable Ted Heap said drug users are mixing the fentanyl with cocaine and heroin to make the drug more potent.

“I truly hope illegal drug users and those who sell this dangerous poison are getting the message because fentanyl is killing people and in record numbers,” Heap said. “I am proud of the investigators who uncovered this supply of fentanyl. Their hard work likely saved lives.”
