📰 News we're reading

1. 17-year-old arrested for 19-year-old's murder on Houston's South Side (fox26houston.com) — A 17-year-old has been arrested on a capital murder charge in the shooting death of 19-year-old Jose Acosta on Houston's South Side earlier this month. Police say Acosta was shot while trying to escape an armed robbery with his younger brother, and investigators are still seeking more details from the public.

2. Seeing lovebugs around Houston? You're not alone (click2houston.com) — If you're swatting lovebugs in Houston right now, you're in good company—residents across southeast Texas are seeing them despite the city's lack of rain. Experts say moisture usually drives these swarms, and entomologists are being consulted to explain why they're showing up off-season in Houston neighborhoods.

3. Houston shines from space in stunning day-and-night images (click2houston.com) — Fresh images from the International Space Station spotlight Houston's massive footprint, from its glowing beltways at night to waterways stretching toward Galveston Bay by day. The photos highlight familiar features like I-610, the Sam Houston Tollway, the Grand Parkway, and NASA's Johnson Space Center from a dramatic 250-mile-high vantage point.

4. Pep talk to pitching change: Astros' Joe Espada accidentally makes his point (houstonchronicle.com) — Houston baseball fans saw an unusual moment in Saturday's Astros loss to the A's, when manager Joe Espada was forced to pull starter Hunter Brown after an inadvertent bullpen signal. Despite Brown's strong ground-ball-heavy outing at Minute Maid Park, umpires ruled Espada's brief pointing motion meant a pitching change, bringing in reliever AJ Blubaugh during what had been a tightly played 1-1 game.

5. Another Houston Flock camera found cut down as surveillance fight escalates (houstonchronicle.com) — Multiple Flock license-plate cameras have been cut down around Houston, including one on Studemont near I-10, intensifying a local fight over surveillance and privacy. Houston police say they're not actively investigating the latest vandalism, while activists and groups like Houston DSA organize events opposing the camera network and law enforcement defends it as a key public safety tool.
