📰 News we're reading

1. HISD cabinet member who joined on takeover's first day resigns (houstonchronicle.com) — Houston ISD's Chief of Strategic Initiatives, Orlando Riddick, who helped drive the district's new school-autonomy partnerships after the state takeover, has quietly resigned effective August 4. His departure leaves a key role in Mike Miles' reform agenda vacant as HISD seeks a new chief of staff and continues rolling out nonprofit-operated school partnerships across the district.

2. Judge denies bail for suspect in Northeast Houston officer-involved shooting (fox26houston.com) — A judge has denied bail for Demetri O'Neal Thomas, accused of shooting at cars and confronting officers in northeast Houston, leaving three people injured. Prosecutors argued his past violent record and community danger outweighed defense claims about his health and mental state, and he's now set for arraignment on October 8 in Harris County court.

3. Houston WWII veteran celebrates 102nd birthday surrounded by gratitude and community (click2houston.com) — A Houston World War II veteran, Napoleon Gilmore, just celebrated his 102nd birthday at the Richard A. Anderson Texas State Veterans Home on Cottingham Street, surrounded by local officials and community members. His long service as a telephone and telegraph lineman in both European and Pacific theaters was honored, offering Houston residents a chance to reflect on the sacrifices of his generation.

4. PAX Unplugged Houston Debuting June 2027 (gamersheroes.com) — Tabletop and board game fans in Houston can look forward to PAX Unplugged Houston, coming June 25–27, 2027, at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The event will feature a large expo floor, tournaments, panels, and community meetups, with badge sales and more details expected later this year for locals planning ahead.

5. New Documents Show Conflicting Accounts of Deadly Houston Shooting (click2houston.com) — Newly released federal documents about July's ICE shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston show conflicting descriptions of whether his van rammed officers or was pinned by them. The discrepancies could affect claims that the agent fired in self-defense, and Harris County prosecutors are conducting an independent investigation that Houston residents can follow closely.
