Car Flies Off Parking Garage Roof, Lands On Nearby Building [UPDATED]

Condition of the driver is unknown, and accident is under investigation by the Houston Fire Department.

HOUSTON, TX -- A man who investigators said hit the accelerator instead of the brakes, accidentally drove his 2013 car drove through a barricade in the top floor of a parking garage near downtown and landed on the roof of a nearby building.

The accident happened at around noon on Sunday in the 3600 block of Kirby Drive and Norfolk Road. (For news updates on this story and other Houston news, just click here to get Patch's daily newsletter and free, real-time news alerts).

Officials with the Houston Fire Department said the man drove through a concrete wall on the 7th floor of the parking garage, and plunged four stories on to the roof of Westheimer Plumbing and Hardware.

The impact caused structural damage to the building, and firefighters said the young man still managed to free himself from the wreckage and was found inside the building, covered with blood and dust.

He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment

Firefighters had to use a crane to remove the car, which was embedded through the roof of the building.

Doug Hermence, owner of Westheimer Plumbing and Hardware, said when he got the call that a car had crashed into his business he'd expected to see the car lodged through the front door, and not the roof.

The business is expected to be closed for several months while repairs are completed.

Charges have not yet been filed

The incident is under investigation.
