Constable Mark Herman Sends Independence Day Message: Be Careful Out There

Herman reinforces safety with fireworks, and warns those who plan to drink to have a designated driver

HOUSTON, TX — Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman asking everyone who plan to celebrate Independence Day this July 4gth, to do so responsibly.

Herman announced in a message on Wednesday that coordinated Constable Patrols that will be focused on communities throughout Precinct 4, encompassing northwest Harris County in Cypress, to northeast Harris County in Humble to help maintain safety. In addition, his team will have DWI STEP Patrols on the streets looking for Impaired Drivers. Do not drink and drive it is not worth it, and the chances of you being arrested will be very high during this period. The Constable’s Office recommends:

  • Don't drink and drive.
  • Designate a driver.
  • Call a cab.
  • Spend the night where you are, if possible.

Herman also urged people to use extreme care if they plan to purchase and set off fireworks in unincorporated areas of Harris County, where they are legal.
According to Consumer Product Safety Commission, the hands and fingers receive 41 percent of the injuries associated with fireworks, followed by heads, faces and ears with 19 percent, trunks (torso, stomach and chest) with 15 percent, legs with 13 percent, eyes with 12 percent and arms with 1 percent. Over half of these injuries were minor to severe burns. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, and sparklers are the primary types of fireworks that resulted in injury, Herman said.Firework Safety TipsFireworks can be dangerous, so in order to prevent injuries and deaths that are related to fireworks, here are a few firework safety tips to follow this Fourth of July:

  • Children should never be allowed to ignite or play with fireworks.
  • An adult should always be supervising firework activity.
  • A garden hose or bucket of water should always be on hand in the event of a mishap or fire.
  • No one should ever try to pick up or re-ignite a firework that did not ignite properly or fully the first time around.
  • Fireworks should only be lit one at a time and the person lighting them should immediately move away from the firework after lighting it.
