Father’s Day Weekend: Things To Do In Houston This Weekend

Looking for family fun events, or ways to honor dad? Check out what's happening in your town.

HOUSTON, TX — If you want to honor dad, the the kids are already bored, and you’re looking to do something with your family besides hang out by the neighborhood pool again, rest assured there are a lot of activities happening in the Houston area and a lot of them won’t break the bank, and some are even free. Check it out and find something new and different to do this weekend.

  • 15th Annual Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration|Missouri City, TX| June 12-18: Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Some of the events include: Friday @ 4 p.m., Family Funday in the Park, at Hunter’s Glen Park; Saturday events include Community Art Exhibit “It Takes a Village”The Community Art Exhibit “It Takes a Village” event will be curated by fabric artist Carolyn Crump at the Missouri City Community Center in the City Hall Complex, 1522 Texas Pkwy. from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The art exhibit is open to the general public and admission is “FREE”.Festival Under the Stars: MCJCF is bringing it back with Legendary R&B Funk Band “Lakeside” in concert along with soul-jazz flutist Althea Rene. The festival will be held at Hunters Glen Park, 1340 Independence Blvd. from 4 – 11 p.m. Bring the family, neighbors, and friends to enjoy an evening under the stars. This is a “FREE” event and is open to the general public. Sunday events will conclude with a Father’s Day cookout at Hunter’s Glen Park, 1340 Independence Blvd. beginning at 1 p.m.; a carnival will later begin at 4 p.m. This new event is open to the general public and is a “FREE” event.   • Theater Under The Stars|Miller Outdoor Theater-Houston, TX|June 16: Take the family out and enjoy a free performance of Once On This Island presented by Theater Under The Stars’ Humphreys School.
  • Experience your inner Neanderthal| Saturday June 17 1-3 p.m.| Humble, TX: Learn what the cave people knew during the Second Saturday Nature Series at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center. You’ll learn about primitive weapons and what they were used for.
  • Weekend Concert Series| Houston, TX: Let the music flow, and pick your venue and genre this weekend with a host of concerts happening in the Bayou City. On Friday, The Houston Ballet performs at the Wortham Theater @ 7:30, and the Graceland Ninjas and Los Skarnales perform at the White Oak Music Hall. On Saturday, Somo: The Answers Tour comes to the House of Blues, while Creed’s Scott Stapp performs unplugged at White Oak Music Hall. Other Saturday performances and venues include the Houston Symphony performing at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, in The Woodlands, and Mr. Big, who is playing at Scout Bar. On Sunday, Chicago and the Doobie Brothers take the stage at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion to wrap up an awesome concert weekend.   • Think you know the answers? Audition for The Wheel of Fortune|Houston, TX -Memorial City Mall| June 17-18 1-5 p.m.: Shows are an hour long and include puzzles, prizes and fun beginning at 1 pm, 2:30 pm and 4 pm. Applications will be distributed an hour before each show. Everyone who attends the event can complete an application with participants selected by random draw. No need to get there early for lines!   • World Refugee Day|Houston, TX: CELEBRATE IMMIGRANT HERITAGE MONTH IN JUNE. Houstonians are invited to participate in the June celebration of our shared heritage as a nation of immigrants. The Office of New Americans and Immigrant Communities joins other city department and community partners in support of the following public events: June 17 - Houston World Refugee Day at Levy Park.   • Space Center Houston|1601 NASA Parkway, Houston, TX | 281-244-2100: The official visitors center for NASA and the Johnson Space Center. If you and your child love science or are interested in space exploration and the universe, it will be a memorable trip. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., most days.   • Downtown Aquarium| Explore life in the ocean and have a little fun at The Downtown Aquarium. There are activities inside and out that include exhibits, a ferris wheel and other rides, games and restaurants. Ticket prices vary per activity.
  • Waugh Bridge Bat Colony| Feeling a little batty? It may be time to experience one of Houston’s most interesting natural events. Hang out while 250,000 bats emerge at dusk from under the Waugh Drive Bridge, located over Buffalo Bayou between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive. Buffalo Bayou Partnership offers Waugh Bridge Bat Colony Pontoon Boat Tours (second & fourth Friday of the month, March-October).
  • Tomball Farmer’s Market| Tomball, TX: Get an early start on Saturday morning and check out rows of arts and crafts, handmade wax candles, jewelry, plants and a lot more. You can even mosey across Market Street to the massive rustic collection at Grannys Korner, or explore the gazebo, fountain and other sites at the Tomball Depot. Admission is Free.
  • Combat Houston|6111 Richmond Ave, Houston, TX : Unleash your inner soldier at Houston’s premier paintball facility. Click the link for hours, and admission prices, and packages.
