FBI Data Indicates Some College Campuses are Safer than Others

Some campuses in more urban areas saw high crime rates, smaller campuses also saw some criminal activity

Recently released crime data from the FBI indicates high crime rates were higher at at some college campuses in Texas in 2015.

Most of the college campuses with the highest crime rates were in dense metropolitan areas, although there were some exceptions.

Using the hypothetical formula of 100,000 students, the data indicated crime is a part of university and college life.

For instance, the FBI data reported there were 1,890 criminal acts committed on the University of Texas at Austin campus in 2015.

Of those crimes 397 of those were property crimes, such as vandalism, theft or burglary, while six violent crimes were committed, such as sexual assault, armed robbery, or simple assault.

In Houston, Rice University led the ranking, with 3,171 crime incidents per 100,000 students, while Texas Southern University ranks third, with 2,512 crime incidents per 100,000 students in 2015.

In Belton, the home of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 1,764 instances of crime were reported, with 65 property crimes and one violent crime.

Southwestern University in Georgetown had over 2,200 crimes reported on campus, but only 34 of those were property crimes and there were no violent crimes reported, making that campus one of the safest in the state.

St.Mary’s University in San Antonio also drew pretty safe numbers with 511 reported instances of crime, that included 18 property crimes and one violent crime

Southern Methodist University reported 1,401 instances of crime, with 154 property crimes and four violent crimes.

In west Texas, Texas Tech University reported 1,166 crimes with tat included 403 property crimes and 7 violent crimes.
