Houston Area Under A Flash Flood Watch As Rain Moves Through Southeast Texas

HOUSTON, TX — Severe weather and flash flooding are expected to be possibilities throughout the day Monday and a band of heavy showers is expected to linger at least one more day.

Scattered showers and rain began to slowly move through the Houston area, spawning funnel clouds at at least one tornado near Katy Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down Sunday near the Firethorne community in Katy, but no injuries were reported. (Want to get daily updates about traffic news and other events going on in your area? Sign up for the free Houston Patch morning newsletter.)

The Houston area experienced scattered showers throughout the area in the overnight hours, with much of the rain impacting southwestern areas, particularly in Fort Bend County, and in the Sugar Land area.

At 8 a.m., the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Brazoria and Matagorda Counties until 10:45 a.m., and issued a flash flood watch for most of Southeast Texas, including Houston and Harris County until 1 p.m.

Other communities in the flash flood watch area include Galveston county. Wharton County, Fort Bend County, Liberty County, and Chambers County.

KTRK reported that some areas can expected between 1-3 inches of rain on Monday, with others getting as much as 4-6 inches throughout the day.
