Houston Texans Trade Quarterback Brock Osweiler to Cleveland Browns

Cleveland takes beleaguered quarterback, a 2017 6th round pick, and 2018 2nd round pick, while Texans get a 2017 4th round pick.

HOUSTON, TX -- The Houston Texans made the most shocking move in the NFL Thursday by trading away starting quarterback Brock Osweiler, a sixth round pick in this year’s draft, and a second round pick for 2018, to the Cleveland Browns.

In exchange, the Texans receive a 4th round pick in this year’s draft, and are now able to clear off $10 million in salary cap space.

Osweiler signed his blockbuster contract, which included $37 million guaranteed, with the Texans after spending four years with the Denver Broncos backing up future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.

Osweiler made nine starts in Denver in the 2015 season, helping the Broncos win the Super Bowl that year. (For news updates on this story and other Houston news, just click here to get Patch's daily newsletter and free, real-time news alerts).

Osweiler was then perceived to be the heir apparent when Manning announced his retirement at the end of the 2015 season.

However, the Denver Broncos weren’t sold on Osweiler, who signed with the Texans in March 2016.

The move allows the Texans to consider other quarterback options for the next year, such as Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, and former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who was released Thursday.
