Two of the awards the zoo received were for its Lowland Tapir Conservation Project and Okapi Conservation Project.

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Zoo took home top honors at the annual Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) conference this year in Seattle. The zoo won in the categories of Volunteer Engagement and North American Conservation. It also won the International Conservation Award and two Significant Achievement Awards, the Houston Zoo said in a news release.
The North American Conservation award was shared with the Fort Worth Zoo for their support of, and participation in, the Houston Toad Recovery Program. The zoo will receive $25,000 from the Arthur L. and Elaine V. Johnson Foundation as part of the award.
The two Significant Achievement Awards were for the zoo's Lowland Tapir Conservation Project and Okapi Conservation Project.
