Hurricane Harvey: Houston Area Shelter List Effective Wednesday, Aug.30
Houston officials added more emergency shelters after Hurricane Harvey forced about 30,000 people from their homes in Texas and Louisiana.

HOUSTON, TX — In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, some 30,000 people from across Texas and Louisiana have been forced from their homes by rising floodwaters. The situation remains critical as Harvey heads back to sea to regroup, then pound the Texas Gulf Coast again with more torrential rain.
“We’re not out of the woods yet,” Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke said in a briefing Monday in Washington. “Harvey is still a dangerous and historic storm.”
In Houston alone, 9,000 people are tasking shelter at the George R. Brown Convention Center, with thousands more in shelters throughout the city.

Over 30,000 People Might Need Shelter After Harvey
A Houston furniture chain owner with a huge heart has turned his store into a shelter for Houstonians fleeing rising floodwaters. Gallery Furniture owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is turning his store on Interstate 45 North into a temporary shelter, he said in a news release. He has asked people to donate kennels to accommodate pets — a lesson learned from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when 250,000 cats and dogs were either lost or perished.
“Houstonians have a safe, dry place to take shelter at Gallery Furniture, so if they can get here, they are welcome,” McIngvale said in the release. “We hope to give them some comfort in this incredibly difficult time.”
In Dallas, authorities said they would open a “mega shelter” at the Ken Bailey Convention Center that could hold about 5,000 people forced from their homes, CNN reported. The shelter is expected to open Tuesday morning.
