Rep. Al Green Threatened With Lynching Over Trump Impeachment Call

Green shared several racially charged voicemails with 100 constituents during a town hall meeting and vowed to keep fighting.

HOUSTON, TX — U.S. Rep Al Green, who took to the House Floor last week to demand the impeachment of President Donald Trump, has received several death threats as a result.

Green, who hosted a town hall meeting on Saturday, became the first representative to go the house floor on May 17 to demand Trump's impeachment. During his speech, Green, a Democrat representing Texas' 9th District, charged that Trump obstructed justice when he fired former FBI Director James Comey, who was investigating the Trump campaign for possible collusion with Russian officials during the 2016 election. During his town hall meeting held at the Fountain of Life Center, Green shared recordings of several racially charged voicemails left at his congressional office that threatened him with lynching, according to a KTRK-13 report.

"You ain't going to impeach nobody. Try it and we will lynch all of you," one caller said.

"We'll actually even give you a short trial before we hang your [expletives]," another caller said.

Green said the recordings were shared before a crowd of about 100 people, who came to gain a perspective on why Green called for Trump’s impeachment, so they could be aware of the types of threats he’d received at his offices in Washington, D.C., and in Houston, according to a Houston Chronicle report.

"We are not going to be intimidated," Green said of the threats. "We are not going to allow this to cause us to deviate from what we believe to be the right thing to do and that is to proceed with the impeachment of President Trump."

The reviews were, however, mixed.

Some were interested in the time it takes for impeachment for cause to happen, while others held strong opinions for and against Green’s action on May 17, according to a KHOU report.

Doug Creamer, who opposed Green’s action, said there was plenty of evidence to have taken the same actions against President Barack Obama and that it was too soon to act against Trump, KTRK reported.

“I think, not only should the FBI director be fired, but the whole FBI should be restructured and not act as a political police against our elected officials," said Betty Jennings.

She and her husband Joe told KHOU they are not huge Trump supporters, but they were even less supportive of what Green said on the House floor.

However, others pledged their support to help Green move the process forward.
Robin Paoli condemned the threats and pledged her support for Green, the Houston Chronicle reported.

"We stand with you," Paoli said. "We stand with your honorable action of holding the president accountable.”

Green said he is expecting the American people to stand up and let their voices be heard.
