Runoff Elections 2021: Houston ISD, HCC Headline Harris County

Three Houston ISD Board of Trustees races are headed for runoffs. The election will take place Dec. 11.

HOUSTON, TX — Harris County voters cast their ballots on Nov. 2, but there are still some races to be decided in the Dec. 11 runoff elections.

The Harris County Elections Administrator's Office released the master sample ballot for the runoff elections over the weekend. Early voting begins Nov. 29 and ends Dec. 7.

Four of the five Houston ISD Board of Trustees positions up for election in 2021 are headed to runoffs. A Houston Community College board seat, a Bellaire City Council seat and a City Council of Missouri City seat also will be decided in runoffs.

In Houston ISD, Bridget Wade and incumbent Anne Sung face a runoff for Position 7 after Wade received more votes but didn't reach the required majority to win the seat. Other runoffs include incumbent Elizabeth Santos against Janette Garza Lindner for Position 1, incumbent Sue Deigaard against Caroline Walter for Position 5 and incumbent Holly Flynn Vilaseca against Kendall Baker for Position 6.

"The runoff is on, and I am ready to press in," Wade said in a statement to Patch shortly after Election Day. "This is for the good of our kids, our city and our future. I know the journey continues, but I learn and grow each day. I am grateful for it all."

Houston lawyer Myrna Guidry, who was unanimously appointed to Position 9 in December 2020, won her seat with over 50 percent of the vote.

The race for the District 8 seat on the Houston Community College System Board of Trustees will have a runoff between incumbent Eva Loredo and Jharrett Bryantt.

In Bellaire, Andréa Ehlers and Brian Witt are headed to a runoff for City Council Position 5.

In the City Council of Missouri City District A race, Reginald Pearson and Monica Riley emerged from a three-candidate race to replace Councilwoman Cheryl Sterling, who opted not to seek re-election. Riley and Pearson were the top two finishers in a tight race that separated them by six votes, though neither received a majority. Riley had 591 votes, followed by Pearson with 585 and Bruce Zaborowski with 86.
