🌱 Surf's Up + Wine Haven + What's Wuxia?

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Today, we'll look at:

  • Surfing opportunities coming to Houston.
  • A farm and winery inside city limits.
  • An action-packed foreign fantasy film event.

But first, today's weather:

A thunderstorm around in the p.m. High: 91 Low: 71.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Talented and amateur surfers alike will be happy to learn that HTX Surf is coming to Generation Park on the north side of Houston in the fall of 2024. The location will feature a structure called a Wavegarden Cove lagoon that uses groundbreaking technology to replicate ocean ground swells. The waves inside of the lagoon will be able to be controlled by a panel featuring different kinds of wave types and modes. The Wavegarden itself will also be divided into two areas: bay and reef. The bay area will provide surfing conditions perfect for beginners while the reef can make waves that will challenge even the chillest of surfer bros. Radical dude! (KTRK-TV)
  2. Beneath the concrete jungle of the Beltway and I-10 is hidden a little piece of paradise where wine lovers can hand feed chickens. Nice Winery is not only a commercial winery but a fully-fledged farm home to chickens, vegetable gardens, and a mission to support cancer research. Sommeliers and chefs Ryan Levy and Ian Eastville run the winery and delight in sharing their little piece of the country with longtime Houstonians. Levy shared, "I love finding people who've lived here all their lives. I'm a native Houstonian and there are people who have lived here their whole lives and they pull up and they're like, 'I never imagined that we would have farms inside the city limits again.'" Grab a glass and taste some Houston born and bred wine at Nice Winery soon. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  3. Houston Wuxia festival introduces a weeklong celebration of high action, martial-arts centric fantasy foreign films played at numerous venues. The event is being put on by the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston which hopes to promote exposure for Taiwanese directors across the city. Museum of Fine Arts Curator Marian Luntz helped organize the event and described the experience as illuminating, saying, "It was intriguing to learn about the genre's origins in classical literature and folklore, and its pervasive influence on pop culture from the 1960s onward." The Wuxia festival will play films at Rice University, the Asia Society Texas Center, and the Museum of Fine Arts. For more information about times and films, see the article attached. 4. Product development manager for Heirloom soils in Porter, Texas, and gardener extraordinaire Mark Bowen shared his gardening hacks for the fall season. Firstly, Bowen said that now is the best time to plant long-term plants like shrubs, trees, and other groundcovers. This is because the fall season allows for more time for these plants to establish deep roots. Secondly, Bowen recommends loosening your soil by adding 3-4 inches of compost to compacted garden beds before replanting to allow for better drainage. He also said rose soils are typically best in the case of new beds. Last of all, it's a great time of year to enhance your soil by under-dressing your beds with compost by placing compost on them and then mulching. You can then top-dress your lawn as well by core aerating and then putting more compost over your turf for increased moisture absorption and soil loosening. (Houston Chronicle)
  5. Baytown officer Juan Delacruz was found not guilty in the shooting and death of Pamela Turner in 2019. The incident in question occurred when Delacruz attempted to arrest Turner for outstanding misdemeanor warrants. When Turner resisted arrest, Delacruz went for his taser. However, he failed to connect with the weapon before Turner stole it from him and tased him in the groin. This prompted Delacruz to draw his pistol and fire five shots at Turner, ultimately killing her. Turner and Delacruz knew each other prior to the incident as Delacruz often patrolled the apartment complex in which she lived. Turner suffered from schizophrenia, a condition which her daughter said Delacruz was aware of prior to her death. After reviewing the evidence, the jury decided that Delacruz had acted in self-defense. Meanwhile, Turner's family attorney Benjamin Crump said, "When will it end when the police can continue to get away with killing Black women and have no accountability?" (Houston Public Media)
