MLK Day Events In The Houston Area
Honor the late civil rights leader at any of these awesome weekend events in Houston and the surrounding area.
HOUSTON, TX — City and municipal offices are closed today, allowing Houstonians to honor the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King.
Several were held on Saturday and Sunday in Pearland, and in downtown, but there are several more events planned on Monday in downtown
- 40th Annual MLK Day Parade and Celebration|Houston’s Minute Maid Park|Monday @10 am: Presented by the Black Heritage Society Organization.
- 24th Annual MLK Parade|Midtown Houston| Monday @ 10am: More than 30 marching bands honor the late civil rights leader
King, who led peaceful demonstrations that ultimately led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965, was shot to death outside of a Memphis hotel in 1968.

The U.S. began observing King's birthday in 1986, three years after President Robald Reagan signed HR3706 making Jan. 15 a federal holiday.
