Man Dies While Saving Niece From Drowning
Man who couldn't swim, slipped into a hole while walking in the water, tosses 4-year old niece to shore before sinking.
HARRIS COUNTY, TX -- A 25-year old man who was enjoying Easter weekend with his family, drowned in the San Jacinto River while saving his 4-year old niece’s life.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon at the Magnolia Garden Park, southwest of Crosby. (Sign up for Patch’s daily newsletter for your neighborhood.)
Investigators said the man was walking in the water and carrying his niece, when he stepped into a hole beneath the water and couldn’t get out.

Witnesses said the man who began screaming for help, was able to toss the little girl to a family member, before sinking beneath the water.
Witnesses tried to help the man but were unable to reach him before he went under.

Family members said the 25-year old man could not swim.
Magnolia Garden Park is a private beach with no lifeguards on duty.
The park has signs posted and advising visitors to swim at their own risk.
Last year, four people drowned at the park, including one last Easter.
Investigators recovered the man’s body and sent to the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.
