📰 News we're reading

1. Proposed property tax reduction fuels county budget battle (lubbocklights.com) — Lubbock County leaders are locked in a tense fight over adopting a no‑new‑revenue property tax rate that would slightly lower the average homestead value and cut the typical county tax bill by about $27. County officials and the sheriff warn this could leave a $4–$5 million budget gap, complicating pay raises, public safety staffing, and key maintenance projects.

2. Citibus to launch new, redesigned routes Sept. 28 (kcbd.com) — Citibus is rolling out Phase One of its 5-Year Service Plan in Lubbock on Monday, Sept. 28, adding one new route and redesigning three others to improve connectivity. Riders can attend August and September outreach events, check updated maps online or in the GoPass app, and contact customer service to see exactly how their daily commutes will change.

3. Trial starts for Lubbock man accused of killing Joshua Rios (everythinglubbock.com) — Jury selection is underway in Lubbock for the trial of Victor Yanez, who is accused of fatally shooting Joshua Rios outside El Santiago Bar on Clovis Road in April 2025. Court documents describe a late-night dispute involving several people that escalated into gunfire, with Rios later dying at University Medical Center. Yanez turned himself in days afterward and remains in the Lubbock County Detention Center on bond.

4. Mo Productions brewing up something special with Coffee Fest (everythinglubbock.com) — Downtown Lubbock coffee fans can mark their calendars for Coffee Fest on Saturday, November 21, 2026, running 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 2024 Broadway. Organized by Mo Productions with Monomyth Coffee, the free-to-enter festival will feature local vendors, a paid coffee flight pass for fall drinks, workshops, live bands, voting for favorite drinks, and a latte-art throwdown between baristas.

5. Inspectors to check Maxey Park neighborhood for code violations Wednesday (kcbd.com) — City code inspectors will be in Lubbock's Maxey Park neighborhood on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., checking for junked vehicles, weeds, rubbish and other violations. Residents can visit the temporary field office at Maxey Community Center to ask questions, report issues, and use a free roll-off dumpster to dispose of bulky items like furniture and branches.
