Local and state leaders say the designation showcases McAllenās culture, safety, and creativity while boosting tourism, supporting local talent, and drawing new investment to the Rio Grande Valley.

ā¢ āBig win for the Valley': McAllen International Airport adds nonstop flights to Phoenix with American Airlines (valleycentral.com) ā McAllen travelers will soon have a new nonstop daily American Airlines route from McAllen International Airport to Phoenix, opening easier access to hundreds of additional destinations. Airport and city leaders say the added hub connection strengthens the Valleyās economy, supports thousands of local jobs, and makes it more convenient for residents to fly for business or leisure. ā¢ Gulf Cartel gun smugglers plead guilty (valleycentral.com) ā A federal case centered in McAllen saw two men plead guilty to smuggling more than 20 guns toward Mexico for a Gulf Cartel faction. Investigators tracked weapons movements between McAllen, Edinburg and Reynosa before seizing rifles, handguns and magazines at the Anzalduas bridge; the defendants now face sentencing in September and up to 10 years in prison.
