NORTH AUSTIN-PFLUGERILLE, TX -- You might call this a two-fur-one special.
In attempts to adopt out a higher-than-normal number of cats and kittens ready for forever homes—some 80 of them, double the usual amount—Pflugerville Animal Shelter officials are running a buy-one-get-one-free holiday special.
“Because we have a lot of cats this time of year, we’re trying to get as many of them we can into homes,” said Ronda McClendon, the shelter’s director.

While breeding season is in full swing, it appears area felines have been especially frisky this year. McLendon said the number of cats is double than usual and exponentially greater than the nearly 30 dogs currently waiting to be adopted.
“I don’t know why we have more than we normally do,” she said. “We probably would normally have, I would say, 40 or so this time of year.”

The adoptable animals are primarily domesticated cats and kittens, but also includes feral felines best suited as barn cats once they’re spayed.
As if the buy-one-get-one-free enticement weren’t enough of an incentive for would-be adopters, the shelter is slashing the cost of adoption. Normally $70 to $90 to adopt a shelter animal, adoption fees have been lowered to $20 through the end of the year, McLendon said.
The fee covers the full range of care: spay/neutering; rabies shots; early development vaccinations; microchip insertion and registration; and 30 days of free pet insurance.
For those unsure whether they’re ready to introduce a pet into their homes, the shelter also offers a foster program that enables would-be owners to take animals home for a short trial period.
Located at 1600 Waterbrook Dr., the shelter is open each day except Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those preferring dogs can view a roster of adoptable ones at pflugervilletx.gov/adoptadog.
