Austin Blood Bank In Critical Need Of Donations
Drop-off in donations over the holidays lowered overall supply, particularly O positive and O negative blood.

AUSTIN, TX — We Are Blood, the sole provider of blood to Central Texas hospitals, is experiencing a critical shortage in supply — especially for O negative and O positive.
Donations ever the holiday season were lower than the need for blood in Central Texas, bringing the community’s blood supply to a dangerously low level, officials said. Those donating in the coming days will help bring the blood supply up to a safe level.
More than 40 hospitals and medical facilities in a 10-county area depend on the steady supply of blood provided by We Are Blood to help ensure that all of the patients served have access to blood when they need it the most, officials said.

O negative and O positive blood are most important due to their universal tendencies, blood bank officials said. O negative blood is the universal blood type and can be transfused into any patient, while O positive blood is the most common blood type, which means many of our Central Texas patients can receive it.
We Are Blood is encouraging all eligible donors — even if they are unsure of their blood type — to visit one of three We Are Blood donation locations or the mobile drives as soon as possible, officials said. Eligible donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 115 pounds.
