Austin Driver Killed While Evading Police After Traffic Stop

Officer trying to make traffic stop on Parmer Lane instead was led on high-speed pursuit before driver was killed after crashing.

AUSTIN, TX — A driver was killed in a collision after leading police in a pursuit that bean as a routine traffic stop on Saturday.

The Austin Police Department confirmed the traffic fatality occurred just before noon. Just before 11:30 a.m. an officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Avalanche before the driver sped off, leading police on a pursuit at a high rate of speed traveling eastbound on Parmer Lane.

According to a police press advisory, a police supervisor called for the pursuit to be terminated but not before the car collided with a Hyundai Elantra after running a red light at Dessau Lane, crashing into the other car at the intersection as the other driver attempted to make a turn.

The driver of the Chevrolet Avalanche was pronounced dead at the scene, while the occupants of the Hyundai were treated for injuries not expected to be life-threatening, police said. "This case is still under investigation by the APD Vehicular Homicide unit and no further information will be released at this time," police said.
