Austin Police Close FM 2222 For Hours After Beer Truck Spills Its Contents

The Ben E. Keith Co. truck rolled over, spilling cases of brew all over the highway.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX -- A portion of Highway 2222 was closed off to traffic this morning after a beer truck spilled its contents on the roadway after a rollover accident.

News station KXAN-TV identified the vehicle as an 18-wheeler operated by Ben E. Keith Co.

Both westbound lanes of the highway have since been reopened, according to officials at the Austin Police Department providing continual updates via Twitter.

Police received a 911 call about the incident at about 6 a.m. From that point, it took several hours to clear the scene given the many cases of beer strewn across the highway.

Apparently, this is not the first time the company’s drivers have been involved in crashes. KXAN News has kept a tally of Ben E. Keith Co. truck crashes, varying in degrees of severity.

In the past 24 months, the company’s drivers have been involved in 54 crashes, according to the news station. Of those, three resulted in fatalities; 25 left injuries in their wake; and 26 trucks had to be towed away.

The site of this morning’s crash is also where a gravel truck ran off the roadway in February, causing a multi-vehicle accident.

Earlier this month, the area also was the site of a three-vehicle crash at FM 2222 at MoPac -- prompting the shutdown of the former corridor. That March 8 crash occurred at around 11 a.m., sending three people to the hospital -- including a woman who suffered critical life-threatening injuries.
