Austin Driver Killed After Crashing Into Pillar Identified
Police said the driver left the roadway on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 5 a.m. along the 8200 block of East U.S. 290 Highway service road.
AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday identified the driver killed last weekend after crashing into a concrete pillar in the northeast part of the city.
The incident occurred on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 5 a.m. along the 8200 block of East U.S. 290 Highway service road, according to a police advisory. Damir Herrera Perez, 31, was traveling eastbound on the service road at a high rate of speed when he left the roadway for an unknown reason before crashing into a concrete pillar.
Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the incident marked the 73rd fatal traffic crash of 2019 in Austin, resulting in 75 fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, police added, there were 66 fatal traffic crashes and 67 traffic fatalities.
