Austin Police ID Driver Who Died After Slamming Into Steel Utility Pole

Spencer Bernard Johnson II, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene of wreck at North U.S. Highway 183 service road and Pecan Park Boulevard.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police recently released the name of a man who died after striking a utility pole last Sunday.

The incident occurred at the North U.S. Highway 183 service road and Pecan Park Boulevard on Sept. 3 at around 2:22 a.m, according to police. A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 beige Kia Spectra was traveling northbound on the service road before driving through the intersection of Pecan Park Boulevard and striking a steel utility pole.

The driver pronounced dead at the scene was identified as Spencer Bernard Johnson II. He was 33 years old.

This case is still being investigated. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-8255. Those with information also can submit tips by downloading APD’s mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.

The incident marked Austin’s 42nd fatal traffic crash and the 44th fatality of 2017. At this time in 2016, there were 47 fatal traffic crashes and 47 traffic fatalities, police noted.
